The use of aluminum has become pervasive in modern society, particularly in the manufacturing of packaging materials. With its excellent corrosion resistance and malleability, aluminum has found its way into the production of beverage cans, food containers, and other consumer goods, ensuring the preservation and safety of various products.

Its remarkable electrical conductivity has led to its crucial role in the electrical industry. Aluminum conductors are widely used for power transmission lines due to their lower weight compared to traditional copper conductors.

The process begins with the extraction of bauxite, a mineral rich in aluminum oxide (Al2O3), from open-pit mines. Bauxite is usually found near the surface of the Earth in tropical and subtropical regions.Bauxite is refined to extract aluminum oxide in a process called the Bayer process. The bauxite is crushed and mixed with a hot, concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to dissolve the aluminum oxide while leaving impurities behind.

Alumina is then used in the Hall-Héroult process to produce aluminum metal. In this process, alumina is dissolved in molten cryolite (Na3AlF6) and placed in an electrolytic cell. A large electric current is passed through the cell, causing aluminum ions to migrate to the cathode, where they are reduced to form molten aluminum metal. Oxygen ions from the alumina combine with carbon anodes at the anode to produce carbon dioxide.
